FOR THE past few months there have been rumblings around the industry that a method of mining long since sidelined is due to resurface. The technique in question is shortwall mining – a technique similar to longwall, but with, surprise, surprise, shorter face lengths, ranging between 40m and 90m, and with the aim of controlling the caving nature of the overlying upper strata, the load on support and the overall operation of the supports applied at the face.
