South Africa-based DRDGOLD Limited (DRDGOLD) has exited deep-level underground mining in order to focus on lower-risk, lower-cost, higher-margin gold production from the retreatment of surface tailings. With a current surface gold resource of 11 million ounces – and total surface throughput from current operations in FY11 of 20.3 million tonnes for the production of 144 065 ounces – the company now ranks as the world’s biggest producer of gold from tailings retreatment. DRDGOLD’s primary listing is on the JSE Limited and it has a secondary listing on the New York Stock Exchange. At 31 December 2011, the Company had 385 383 767 shares in issue and a market capitalisation of $209 million.
