Situated at the junction of Highways 1 and 94, Norseman is the main town of the Shire of Dundas, which covers an area of some 93,000 sq km. While the main industry is gold mining, there are vast sheep properties and the shire also boasts the largest semi arid woodland in the world.
The town was named after prospector Laurie Sinclair’s horse, ‘Hardy Norseman’, who uncovered a piece of gold bearing quartz in 1894. A rich gold reef was discovered and thousands flocked to make their fortune. Since then, a rich history of gold mining has developed with numerous mines operating over the years and many ounces of gold being extracted.
