US-based Gold Reserve Inc has confirmed that the Venezuelan government has "assumed control" of its Brisas gold project in Bolivar state.

Gold Reserve has been involved in a long-running dispute with the Venezuelan authorities over ownership of the project, and last week filed for international arbitration against the government.

"Government personnel arrived at the Brisas Camp on Monday to deliver notification of the government's takeover of the property, and to take physical possession of that property," Gold Reserve said in its statement.
