A panel set up to assess Vedanta Resources plc’s planned bauxite mine in the state of Orissa has said the mine would cause serious damage to local tribes.
The panel, created by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, reported that the mine could destroy millions of square kilometres of land and “severely disturb [an] important wildlife habitat”.
The panel also accused the company of illegally occupying the land it proposes to mine in “an act of total contempt for the law”.
It went on to say that allowing the project to proceed as stated would “shake the faith of tribal people in the laws of the land which may have serious consequences for the security and well being of the entire country.”
The report said that the ministry could not grant clearance for the use of forest lands unless a series of conditions were met.
