The Professor of Mining at Witwatersrand University in South Africa, Huw Phillips, says he has devoted most of his research during a 40-year career into mining health and safety because he had first-hand experience as a young man of Britain's worst mining disaster (the death of 116 children at the Pantglass junior school in Aberfan).
