Miners trapped for 17 days after a tunnel collapse at the San Jose copper-gold mine in Chile have been found alive.
Rescuers have started drilling a hole to rescue the 33 miners after the first black and white images of those trapped where shown on local television over the weekend.
“The whole of Chile is crying with joy and emotion,” Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said while holding a letter from the miners. “This tells us they are alive, united and waiting to return to the sunlight and their families’ arms.”
The miners have survived since August 5 in a refuge 700m below the surface. Rescuers plan to pass food and water down the initial drill hole to keep the miners alive. A larger hole, which may take three to four months to be ready, is being drilled to retrieve those trapped.
Following the incident, President Pinera said the government would overhaul the supervision of mining operations in the country. He announced plans to accelerate legislation under review to revise the regulations currently in place.
