The making of Marmato

The history of the Marmato gold deposit goes back more than five centuries to pre-Columbian times. It was an important mine in the Spanish colonial period. Such was Marmato’s importance that Simon Bolivar, The Liberator, mortgaged the mine to English banks to finance the fight against Spain for the independence of Colombia.

As a result, Marmato was mined by a series of English companies throughout the nineteenth century,  including the Western Andes Mining Company and latterly the Colombian Mining and Exploitation Company...
