CANADA DAY 04-12-11

Date: Sunday 4th December 2011

As the effects of the recession begin to recede, Canada remains one of the top destinations for mineral exploration.

Total exploration spending in Canada last year was some US$1.8 billion. This is only half the total spent in 2008 but reflects a similar decline in global expenditure.

Fortunately, access to capital has eased slightly (last year was a record period for mining-industry financing on the Toronto Stock Exchange) and commodity prices have recovered much of their lost ground. As a result, there has been resurgence in exploration activity across Canada, particularly in gold, potash and uranium.

Canadian provinces continue to dominate the Fraser Institute's ranking of the world's most attractive exploration destinations. In the institution's mid-2010 rankings, five Canadian provinces were ranked in the top seven places (Alberta 1st, Quebec 3rd, Yukon 4th, Saskatchewan 5th and Newfoundland & Labrador 7th). The dominance was broken only by Finland (2nd) and Chile (6th).

These province offer strong government support, knowledgeable policy makers and many provinces continue to offer exploration incentives. Because of the local expertise, Canadian companies are also successful explorers around the world.
