Real miners – the boys and girls wearing fluorescent jackets, big boots and a safety helmet with a light on top for seeing underground – have been known to laugh at the world’s ‘sand’ miners, who scrape up titanium and zircon-rich ore from shallow pits in a process detractors unkindly dubbed ‘gardening’.
