'Dr Doom' leaves resource companies after racist comments

Market commentator Marc Faber, known as “Dr Doom” for his bearish forecasts, has vacated his position on several resource company boards after making racist comments in his latest newsletter.

Both Ivanhoe Mines (CN:IVN) and asset manager Sprott Inc (CN:SII) asked for and accepted Faber's resignation, while NovaGold Resources Inc (CN:NG) announced his resignation effective immediately.

In widely circulated comments, Faber had written "thank God white people populated America" in his October Gloom, Boom & Doom newsletter.

"Otherwise, the US would look like Zimbabwe, which it might look like one day anyway, but at least America enjoyed 200 years in the economic and political sun under a white majority," he wrote.

"I am not a racist, but the reality — no matter how politically incorrect — needs to be spelled out."

He stood by his comments when asked by American news outlets, telling the Wall Street Journal, "If stating some historical facts makes me a racist, then I suppose that I am a racist".

Ivanhoe Mines, which is advancing its three principal projects in southern Africa, said it disagreed with and deplored the personally-held views about race that Faber had published.
