A fall of ground accident resulted in the death of a mineworker on Saturday at the Two Rivers platinum mine in South Africa, co-owned by African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd

African Rainbow, which holds a 55% stake in the mine, said today that operations had been temporarily suspended until safety procedures could be reassessed.

In related news, Impala said today that strike action was causing stoppages at the company’s Rustenberg operations, among the world’s largest platinum group metals mine sites. Implats said that approximately 5,000 rock drill operators had downed tools since last Friday, following a dispute over salaries.

“A court order has declared the strike illegal, and the Company will follow due legal process with all employees who do not report for duty on Tuesday,” the company said in a statement.

Implats had previously negotiated a two-year wage settlement with the country’s National Union of Mineworkers in October 2011, following a dispute earlier that year.
