Iron-ore shipping facilities at Port Hedland, Dampier and Cape Lambert have closed temporarily as the category-one tropical cyclone Heidi approaches the coast of north-west Australia.

The cyclone, which also forced closure of several offshore oilfields, is expected to make landfall on the Pilbara coast overnight. Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd have each confirmed a halt to iron-ore loading at their respective facilities. BHP Billiton said that will not be giving a daily update on the status of its operations, but that any impacts on production will be reflected in its quarterly report.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said that storm may intensify to category-two status after moving overland. There are presently no reports of the adverse weather affecting production at iron-ore mining operations in the Pilbara.
