Newcrest Mining Ltd has suspended operations at the Bonikro gold project in Ivory Coast due to security concerns following the country's controversial presidential election.
President Laurent Gbago and the opposition candidate Allasane Outtara have both claimed victory following the November 28 election. This has caused serious unrest in the West African country.
Newcrest said: “A number of precautionary measures have been in place throughout the election period to ensure the safety and security of all employees, including restrictions on non-essential travel.
“Over the weekend, as a further precautionary measure, mine operations were temporarily suspended. Plans are in place to recommence operations as soon as possible.”
Newcrest acquired the Bonikro project following the acquisition of Lihir Gold earlier this year. The gold mine produces about 120,000oz/y.
