Northam Platinum Ltd has advised the strike at its Zondereinde mine in the Limpopo province of South Africa continues.
The company said the second round of mediation talks with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) had failed yesterday after the majority (about 80%) of workers at the site downed tools on September 5.
Northam remains “firm in rejection” of the NUM’s demands, which include: a 15% increase in basic wages, the collapsing of a number of bands that increase the demands to 19.5%, and the increase in the living-out allowance.
In aggregate, the total cost to the company is equal to a 32% increase, Northam added.
Glyn Lewis, Northam chief executive officer, said: “This is a disappointing outcome after the best efforts of the CCMA (Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration).
“Nevertheless, we remain available and committed to seeking a resolution to this deadlock, which will serve to satisfy the best interests of the company, its employees and its shareholders.”
