NAMIBIA’S Okorusu Fluorspar (Pty) Ltd is continuing to expand output of acid-grade fluorspar (97% purity) for sale to European markets, with a production target of 127,000 t of wet material (8.5% moisture) in 2006, according to managing director Mark Dawe.Okorusu operates an open-pit mine near Otjiwarongo in north-central Namibia, and is now the second- biggest fluorspar producer in Africa, after South Africa’s Witkop mine and ahead of Kenya and Morocco, the continent’s other main producers. All exports are shipped out via the Atlantic coast port of Walvis Bay, and Okorusu has become Namibia’s largest bulk exporter to destinations outside Africa. The 2006 target represents a 10% increase over last year’s output, when Okorusu, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Belgium’s Solvay chemical and pharmaceutical group, produced a record 114,800 t, equivalent to 105,000 t of dry material
