Platinum Australia is to meet with the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) in South Africa Ltd after its Smokey Hills mine was forced to shut down.

The Perth-based company said the DMR informed it on Friday that the mine operator, Phokathaba Platinum Ltd, had failed to comply with the company’s social and labour plan, including its local economic development projects and human resources development programmes.

Platinum Australia said: “An urgent meeting has been sought with the DMR and is expected to take place on the afternoon of Monday July 25.

“Phokathaba is also seeking urgent injunctive relief in the high court of The Republic of South Africa.”

Approximately 1,000 people are employed on the Smokey Hills mine by Phokathaba and its contractor, Platinum Australia, added.
