Rio Tinto has announced that it has entered into a three-year formal collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), to "strengthen its sustainable development efforts".
IUCN director general Julia Marton-Lefèvreand said that the conservation group and Rio Tinto "recognise that to find sustainable solutions to environmental and conservation challenges, cross-sector engagement and collaboration are critical,".
"If business is part of a problem it must also contribute to finding and delivering the solutions," Mr Marton-Lefèvreand added.
Rio Tinto said the partnership would focus on further developing the company's biodiversity programmes and build benchmarks for biodiversity management in the mining sector.
Chief executive Tom Albanese said: "Through our collaborative efforts, we hope to develop programmes and actions that will contribute to enhanced environmental performance - both for Rio Tinto and the broader resources sector."
