African Barrick Gold plc’s (ABG) North Mara mine in Tanzania has been the target of a criminal attack that has left seven people dead.

More than 800 intruders illegally entered the mine site with the intention to remove ore from the run of mine pad, ABG said.

Tanzanian police were called to the area and were set upon by the intruders, who were armed with machetes, rocks and hammers.

ABG has been informed by police that a number of intruders sustained gunshot wounds as a result of their actions, leaving seven dead and 12 injured.

The company added: “The police have begun an investigation into the incident. Additional police have been deployed to the area.

“ABG has also initiated an internal company investigation. There have been no material impacts to the operation or production.”
