Gold Fields Ltd’s gold mines in South Africa are facing a strike on March 7 due to a dispute over a fitness test with the country’s largest labour union.
The National Union of Mineworkers is threatening to stop work at all of Gold Fields’ operations unless the test for new recruits is abolished, the company said.
Executive vice president and head of South African operations, Vishnu Pillay, said: "Gold Fields fully intends to continue seeking constructive engagement with the NUM in an effort to find a solution that satisfies the requirements of the law, and is acceptable to the NUM, the company and all other stakeholders."
According to Gold Fields, the Mine Health and Safety legislation in South Africa requires an employer to implement a Functional Work Capacity Safety System together with an associated Code of Practice.
However, the NUM has recently expressed dissatisfaction with the system used by Gold Fields after 'certain' new employees had been considered unfit for work on an underground mine.
