James Steel of HSBC in New York looks at the yield curves for gold. The slope of this curve (the difference between long and short-term rates) is much steeper than normal. He notes that traditional monetary economics identifies three basic factors that affect the slope of the yield curve; the current level of the real Federal funds rate relative to the long-run level, the level of near-term inflation expectations relative to longer term inflation expectations, and the level of the near-term risk premiums relative to risk longer-term risk premiums

A cobalt climate (04-04-08)
COBALT reached US$52.50/lb at the start of March, up 74% over the past year and the highest price since the modern market for cobalt trading was established in 1978. Price forecasting remains difficult, however, mostly attributed to contract wrangling in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC; see box opposite).

Colombia: significant mining development (15-02-08)
ONLY two years ago, few foreign investors dared venture into Colombia, fearful of kidnappings, but now over 70 Canadian juniors (exceeding even optimistic 2006 estimates) and the likes of Chile’s Antofagasta Minerals plc and South Africa’s AngloGold Ashanti Ltd are keen to tap the country’s coal, silver, copper and gold reserves. Colombia Goldfields Ltd is consolidating an historic 5.3Moz gold project at Marmato Mountain in Antioquia province, and has purchased all but 18 of 117 mineral titles from artisana

Diamonds (2006 and first half 2007)
2006 was a year of consolidation. It was a year of mergers, takeovers, mine closures and the withdrawal of significant exploration effort in several countries to focus on a select few. Consumer spending for luxury goods was described as solid, but 2006 is considered by many as a “soft” year, as there was actually a 2% decrease in prices for rough diamonds in mid year, which was offset by successive price increases of 2% and 5% in early and mid 2007.

Mining continued to recover its significant position in the Chilean economy in 2006. It represented around two-thirds of the US$55.9 billion worth of total exports, and about a quarter of the US$145.8 billion GDP. Even so, industrial manufactured products, including such things as processed wood and prepared fish products, as well as wines and fruit juices have increased considerably in value and volume. This has helped to promote development in the Regions, away from Santiago. Similarly, at least two inter

Outdated mining practices and environmental concerns, however, created regular disruption to Chinese output, which caused prices to fluctuate, albeit with an overall upward tendency.

Bismuth 2006 and first half 07
Bismuth is an environmentally-friendly metal, its toxicity being much lower than that of its neighbours in the periodic table such as lead, thallium, and antimony. It is a naturally diamagnetic brittle metal, has a high electrical resistance and the second-lowest thermal conductivity of any metal. Elemental bismuth (Bi) is one of very few substances where the liquid phase is denser than the solid phase. Bismuth expands on solidification, possesses the widest range between melting and boiling points among al
