The Mining Journal website this week includes a recently-released report from the US Department of Energy (DoE) on a proposed strategy for materials that are 'critical' to efforts to advance a clean-energy economy.

The Critical Materials Strategy report builds on the DoE's previous work in this area and, it says, "provides a foundation for future action", and is "a first step toward a comprehensive response to the challenges before us".

The report examines, in particular, the role of rare earth metals.
