The Mining Journal website this week includes a recently-published report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) that identifies systemic failures on the part of Barrick Gold Corp at the Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea.

HRW concluded that failures by the Toronto-based company prevented it from recognising the risk of abuses, and from being able to respond to allegations that abuses had occurred.

The report also examines the impact of Canada's "failure to regulate the overseas activities of its companies", and calls on Barrick to address environmental and health concerns around the mine with greater transparency.
