Worldwide nonferrous exploration budgets rose steadily through the early 1990s to crest at US$5.2 billion in 1997 (see figure 1), before falling for five straight years to a 12-year low of US$1.9 billion in 2002. Since then, the total exploration budget (excluding uranium), as estimated by the Metals Economics Group (MEG), rose for six straight years to reach the highest total since MEG’s annual series of reports (Corporate Exploration Strategies; CES) commenced in 1989.
