Energy undermining Pakistan's progress

Pakistan’s energy sector has been in crisis for a number of years. Despite making energy a central campaign pledge ahead of the 2013 general election, prime minister Nawaz Sharif has failed to make visible progress, with the sector constituting the largest single drain on the economy and remaining one of the biggest challenges facing the country.

With the sector unsustainably dependent on gas-powered modes of generation, and restrictions on the domestic gas supply, there is a rising frequency of blackouts.
