Rio pilots 'near-zero' CO2 iron-making

Near-zero carbon steel-making has potentially become a step closer to reality with mining giant Rio Tinto proving its “BioIron” method in a small-scale pilot plant in Germany, the company said.

“The results from this initial testing phase show great promise,” Rio’s chief commercial officer Alf Barrios said.

Using raw biomass instead of metallurgical coal as a reductant and microwave energy, Rio says it is able to convert its Australian Pilbara iron ore to metallic iron.
