Escondida workers reject BHP offer

Workers at the Sindicato No. 1 union at Escondida voted to reject an offer by mine operator BHP to avert a strike, stating that worker safety cannot be bought-off by a bonus payment.

The union said BHP offered a payment of 2.8 million pesos (US$3,000) to each worker and offered to modify the collective contract.
