New Gold’s (CN:NGD) Rainy River mine in north-western Ontario has begun processing ore, and should pour its first gold in early October as the company works to put an inauspicious start to 2017 behind it.

Speaking to Mining Journal from the Denver Gold Forum at Colorado Springs, CEO Hannes Portmann said the operation was ramping up apace towards its nameplate capacity of 21,000 tonnes per day.

“We’re certainly off to a very good start, so I’m confident in our ability to hit commercial [production] in November,” he said.
