Mining regulation around closure best practice has shifted from a purely environmental focus to having an increasingly socioeconomic flavour, according to Ian Coles, mining lead at international law firm Mayer Brown.

"It used to be focused on purely environmental issues but now socioeconomic [issues] are just as important - what to do with community affairs, what to do with employees when mines are closed are very important pieces of the puzzle, nowadays."
