Indonesia shrugs off WTO ruling on downstream dreams

The World Trade Organisation has ruled in favour of a European Union challenge to Indonesia’s nickel export ban, while the president of the Southeast Asian nation Joko Widodo intends to appeal the decision – and expand similar measures to other commodities.

“I told the minister, ‘Continue, don’t stop’. Don’t just stop at nickel but continue with others,” president Jokowi said.

The EU's complaint regarded two measures by Indonesia, which included a prohibition of the exportation of nickel ore and a requirement that all nickel ore be processed domestically.
