Charlotte-based Albemarle Corp has defended its deal with Mineral Resources, which saw it pay the Australian company US$820 million for a 60% in the Wodgina lithium mine only to suspend it the same day.

The $1.3 billion deal also gives MinRes 40% of Albemarle's 50,000 tonne per annum lithium hydroxide facility being built at Kemerton, south of Perth.
