Sumitomo’s reported plan to sell its minority stake in the KGHM-controlled Sierra Gorda copper JV is likely to draw interest from other non-mining specialists, according to BMO analyst Edward Sterck.

The Sierra Gorda mine, operated by KGHM, is located in Chile – in the Atacama Desert in the Antofagasta region, approximately 60 km south-west of the city of Calama

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Sumitomo was planning to sell its 45% stake in the Chile asset, and that KGHM was not interested in increasing its stake in the JV.
