Working alongside our members, MAC focuses on sustainable mining practices, promotes the mining industry nationally and internationally, works with governments on policies affecting the sector, and educates the public on the value mining brings to the economy and the daily life of Canadians. MAC’s members account for most of Canada’s production of base and precious metals, uranium, diamonds, metallurgical coal, mined oil sands and industrial minerals, and are actively engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting, refining and semi-fabrication.

For over 20 years, MAC has led the way in responsible tailings management, a significant focus of the association’s work, starting with its publication of A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities in 1998. The Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program, launched by MAC in 2004, is focused on sustainable mining practices and delivers world leading guidance on responsible tailings management by providing a rigorous and well-established set of standards for credible performance measurement and reporting.
