Indonesia is considering expanding its export bans to include copper, while the Philippines may follow in Jakarta’s footsteps in focusing on value-capturing by building up its nickel processing facilities rather than exporting the raw product.

“If we are consistent with our policy, by 2027, we will own a huge ecosystem of electric vehicles and batteries," Indonesian president Joko Widodo said.

Indonesia, which banned nickel ore exports in January 2020, and is planning to ban bauxite exports in June, is now "calculating a plan to stop copper [ore] exports in the near future," the country's
