The price of manganese hit a multi-year high of more than US$9 per dry metric tonne unit this week, 400% higher than a few months ago, but don’t expect a sharp supply response from miners is the verdict of investment analysts on a tour of South32’s South African operations.

As the world’s biggest producer of manganese with mines in Australia and South Africa, South32 is perfectly placed to cash in on soaring prices, a view shared by some investors but not all the
