EV makers challenge to source low carbon lithium

Electric vehicles (EVs) are touted as one of a suite of technologies to help decarbonise human activity and move away from the burning of fossil fuels. However, research by UK consulting firm Skarn Associates shows that the carbon footprint of the lithium that goes into the lithium-ion batteries power EVs, varies widely.

Skarn Associates shows CO2 footprint of lithium sources

At first blush, lithium production from hard rock spodumene sources in Australia appears to have a lower carbon foot than lithium brine production from Latin America.
