It said there had been no material impact on the operation, with production at the mine continuing without any significant interruptions.

It said Moma's on-site team had ensured all employees and assets were protected by activating the cyclone preparedness plan.

Kenmare took the precaution of suspending product loading activities and shipping for seven days, but resumed these on March 15 after sea conditions improved.

The power network in northern Mozambique was not affected by the cyclone and therefore there was no interruption to Moma's grid power.

"Kenmare is deeply saddened by the news of loss of life and scale of damage, and is providing financial support towards the relief effort in Mozambique. The company's employees have also initiated a collection scheme to provide clothing and dry goods for the people impacted by the cyclone," it said.

The UN has described Cyclone Idai as possibly the worst ever weather-related disaster in the southern hemisphere, with millions of people affected in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Mozambique seems to have been the worst hit, with its death toll currently around 200 people and likely to rise.
