The company has been involved with BHP's South Flank mine, which is to replace the production from its Yandi mine in Western Australia's Pilbara, from the feasibility study phase.

The US$3.4 billion South Flank project will include a 80 million tonne per annum crushing and screening plant, an overland conveyor system and rail loading facilities - and Fluor is providing construction and project management services for that.

Neither Fluor nor BHP have disclosed the value of the contract.

Fluor Mining & Metals business president Tony Morgan said Fluor had worked with BHP on numerous iron ore projects in the Pilbara.

"We worked closely with BHP to optimise the South Flank project feasibility study and improve the project's capital efficiency," he said.

"As part of an integrated project team with BHP we have developed an approach that optimises the cost and schedule for the project."

First production of iron ore from South Flank is targeted for 2021.
