I wrote a fortnight ago about how the electric vehicle (EV) market could shrug off the effects of the pandemic-led downturn rather quicker than many people seem to be expecting. Fundamental to that outcome is the behaviour of government, and while some administrations have been focused exclusively on trying to prevent further spread of the disease, others – most notably the one helmed by French president Emmanuel Macron – have been able to keep a lid on the virus while forging a path ahead for domestic industry.

Renault's new Captur E-tech plug-in

Macron unveiled an US$8 billion support package for France's car industry on Tuesday, including subsidies of up to €12,000 for families getting rid of an old car in favour of a new EV.
