Fawzy served as Egypt's industry minister between 1993 and 1996, and he is familiar with London through his former position as cultural counsellor to the Egyptian Embassy in the UK and PhD studies at University College, London.

He is currently chairman of the Egyptians Abroad Company for Investment and Development and formerly served on the board of HSBC Bank Egypt SAE.

Centamin chairman Josef El-Raghy said the company would benefit from Fawzy's broad expertise.

"Dr Fawzy is a pioneer who has been responsible for driving and developing Egyptian industry reform through the wide range of senior positions he has held over many years," he said.

"His extensive experience within the public and private sector, will be an excellent complement to the corporate strategy and the strength of our existing balanced, multi-disciplinary board."
