Shares in copper miner Sandfire Resources (ASX: SFR) continued an upward trend, rising more than 4% in afternoon trade as copper prices remain high on supply concerns with wage talks underway in Chile.

The company reported today that the CEO of its Toronto-listed affiliate Sandfire Resources America, John Shanahan, had died suddenly on the weekend.

Mineral Resources (ASX: MIN) and graphite developer Syrah Resources (ASX: SYR) were down about 6.5% at the time of writing, both on no news.

MinRes last week gave permission to its takeover target Atlas Iron to enter discussions with third parties.

The gold price remains just below US$1,298 an ounce on the spot market.

In Toronto, gold major Barrick Gold closed 1.78% higher yesterday while in New York, Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) was up 0.5%.

Diversified major Rio Tinto (LSE: RIO), which today announced Jakob Stausholm would replace Chris Lynch as chief financial officer in September, had closed just 0.02% lower yesterday in London.

BHP (ASX: BHP) was off more than 1% in afternoon Australian trade.
