Transparency, disclosure and 'bat-phone' improving tailings dam safety

Recent years have seen some catastrophic tailings dam failures at Mt Polley in British Columbia, Canada, in 2014, Samarco in Brazil in 2015 and Brumadinho in Brazil in 2019. Failures are rare, but when they do happen, they can have very serious consequences. Since Brumadinho, regarding which operator Vale agreed to a US$7 billion settlement in February, there have been a number of initiatives within the industry, including the August 2020, Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, or GISTM. Mining Journal Select 365 spoke with experts from some of the world's leading miners to find out how tailings storage facilities or TSF are being made safer, the steps the industry is taken to achieve this and some of the challenges in order for it to do so.
