China is expected to lose ground to other regions in terms of lithium production in the years ahead while the country’s demand for the product leads the world, BMI said.

“China-based battery manufacturers continue to look abroad for supply as domestic reserves and available projects are inadequate to meet demand,” the group said.

"Although we forecast a global supply deficit for lithium by 2025 and continued elevated prices, we do not expect that mining projects in China will benefit significantly," BMI said.
