Markets up, gold lower

Key markets closed marginally higher and most futures were positive, as the European Union discussed a stimulus package and hopes continue for US stimulus measures.

The gold price was slightly lower than this point yesterday, about US$1,868 an ounce on the spot market.

Australia-based gold producer Newcrest Mining, which listed in Toronto last month (TSX: NCM), fell 3.5% to a low of C$27.50 yesterday.

In South Africa, Sibanye-Stillwater closed down 4.48% to R51.01, but remains near the top of a one-year range.

Having just bought shares on-market, its CEO Neal Froneman has retained some bonus shares and American Depositary Receipts awarded in March but sold a chunk of each to cover the associated tax liabilities.  

In the UK, precious metals producer Fresnillo fell a further 1.36%, while gold major Newmont gained 1.14% in New York.

Meanwhile the new leadership team at silver hopeful Bunker Hill Mining (CSE: BNKR) has applied to list on the TSX Venture Exchange. The company has the option to acquire the past-producing mine in Idaho.

Finally, RT Minerals (TSXV: RTM) shot up almost 135% yesterday to C27c on intersecting 33.1m at 2.81g/t gold from the Link Catharine property, 25km from Kirkland Lake in Ontario.
