The country and its mining industry have been disrupted in recent months due to unprecedented power outages.

Yesterday the government appointed Professor Malegapuru William Makgoba as interim chair of Eskom following Jabu Mabuza's recent resignation.

"The government is going through the process of putting in place a reconfigured board in line with president Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement on Friday," the department of public enterprises said.

The National Union of Mineworkers and National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa were set to stage the picket, with NUMSA also saying they demanded Pravin Gordhan be removed as minister of public enterprises.

The Minerals Council South Africa this week labelled the power supply crisis the "the biggest single risk" as it called on the government to take urgent steps to address the country's economic crisis.

Eskom said no load shedding occurred yesterday "despite a constrained and vulnerable system" and none was expected for the rest of the week.
